Open The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair (to page 98) and watch your tiling worries dissolve before the simple beauty of photography. Black & Decker has anticipated your every question and problem with interior, exterior, and home systems repairs, and detailed the solutions in just over 500 pages. In no other human endeavor is a visual guide so important as home repair (well, maybe brain surgery), so this is a crucial aid to the handyperson. Easy-to-find sections on floors, insulation, roofing, chimneys, water heaters, wall switches, air conditioning, and much more are well-designed, brilliantly illustrated, and carefully outlined with step-by-step instructions from masters. The photos in particular are extremely valuable, offering many different views (sometimes even exploded) of the operation in question, and always showing just enough to communicate without overwhelming the reader with too much detail. These alone would be worth the price of the book, but the written explanations and instructions are also very helpful, offering tools, materials lists, and hints that wouldn't occur to the amateur. The book finishes with a maintenance schedule to help you keep repairs from becoming serious, and the end papers have conversion charts and tables that you'll use time and again. If you can't have Norm the master carpenter over to help you fix your old house, The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair is the next best thing. --Rob Lightner Book News, Inc.: Master carpenters, plumbers, electricians, and other contractors contributed their expertise to this up-to-date guide to important home improvements, from patching cracks in a basement floor to replacing a roof. Customer Reviews Good Book, January 5, 2003 Reviewer: Richard Beaty from Layton, Utah The book tells you what you need to know to fix just about anything in your house. It has color photos to show you step by step how to do it. If you can't fix it with this book you need to hire a contractor anyways. The best tool for a handyman of the house, October 29, 2002 Reviewer: A reader from Sunnyvale, CA USA I have a lot of tools like hammer, screwdrivers etc., but they are not of much use without some guidance on how to use them. This book not only tells you how to use which tools effectively but also gives detailed instructions on fixing common problems in the house. Since I like fixing things I find this book the best tool I can have, I have learnt a lot from this book and have fixed toilets, done plumbing work, filling nail holes etc.. You will definitely learn a lot from this book if you like fixing things in/around the house. Great book, October 22, 2002 Reviewer: A reader from Washington DC Very useful for a person who does not know much about home maintenance and repair but wants to be able to do it him/herself. At the back of this book is a monthly and yearly maintenance checklist - a big plus. Photos, details, and instructions are excellent. I also bought the B&D Home Improvement book (blue cover) and it's just as fabulous. Highly recommend these books. Huge, colorful, helpful book!!, July 22, 2002 Reviewer: ellafan from Whitehall, MI United States Having just retired,I decided it would behoove me(and my budget)to learn how to fix things around the house myself, instead of paying someone else to do it.I know I won't be tackling major projects, but if I did,the info on how to complete the project would surely be in this terrific book.I was overwhelmed at the size of the book, initially, but as I read through it,I realized that each page contains a step-by-step photo sequence from the beginning of the job,to the end.Wonderful for someone such as I who has a difficult time remembering "righty-tighty,lefty-loosey." I think this massive book, crammed full of top-notch advice is going to save me a bundle in home repairs. So I will be able to spend more money at my other home...amazon. Lots of Photos, June 4, 2002 Reviewer: tlecesne from AZ Just bought a house that needed minor work, such as painting, floor repair, wire repair, etc. This book gave detailed descriptions on how to reapir all my needs. I have looked at several books and liked this one the best. This book lists most of the repairs that any home owner will need to do. Even if you decide to pay someone to do the repairs for you this book will give you an idea of what the repair man should be doing. This will help you from being taken advantage of. A great reference manual, June 4, 2002 Reviewer: eastcoastwahine from Wilmington, NC My dad gave this book to my fiance and I after we bought our first house. We have found this book to be an indispensible reference tool since we are two people who know little about home repairs. Our house was built on 1963 and has not been updated much, so this book has been utilized quite often. The pictures are very clear, the language is easy to understand. I highly recommend this book to a new homeowner. Home Repair/Not Home Improvement, February 27, 2002 Reviewer: A reader from San Antonio, Texas United States This is an excellent book if you want to repair just about anything in your home. However, do not confuse HOME REPAIR WITH HOME IMPROVEMENT. This is a book on how to repair already existing fixtures and other items in your home. It is not about adding additional rooms, "shelves", patios, etc. No book will cover everything, but for your money, Black & Decker has provided plenty of pictures on every page along with detailed instructions. You have a simple choice, call a repairman every time there is a problem, or learn how to fix it yourself. Which investment do you think is more productive in the long run? Outstanding Photos, December 13, 2001 Reviewer: A reader from Virginia Beach, VA United States Excellent book for NEW homeowners. Photos are great and very helpful. I'm ready to buy the Home Improvement one. FIVE STARS...AND MORE STARS!, December 10, 2001 Reviewer: petersmaclean from Prince Edward Island, Canada How I wish this book had been around when I needed it most. As a single mother who was working, finishing my eduation and raising three daughters in the 70's and 80's, money was scarce and one learned how to do what had to be done. So, through a variety of good but not great books, a few friends, and trial and error(more error than trial,) I repaired the plumbing, replaced the light fixtures, painted, papered, patched and mended! Life would have been so much easier with a book like this one. There is not a thing about general home repair that cannot be found here and the photographs make the task a breeze. No more sketchy illustrations or trying to follow instructions with a diagram that best resembles Heiroglyphics! For anyone who is a novice at home repair, this book is a must, and even the more experienced person is sure to find some excellent tips and techniques to make the job easier. I now have a husband who looks after the household repairs, but even "Mr. Fix-it" could benefit from this terrific book. Black & Decker "really know their stuff" and have come up with a fantastic, indispensable book! Great Book, November 14, 2001 Reviewer: Dan Gates from Cape Coral, Florida I just bought a house and have never done much home repair. I needed to put in 2 new toilets and do some other work. This book is perfect for such things. The pictures and descriptions are outstanding. Don't hesitate to buy this. Great for Newbies like me.
